SRG Recent Report Finds MediaTek WiMAX SoC Outperformed Its Pe…

HSINCHU, Taiwan, July 28 /PRNewswire-Asia-AsiaNet/ –

MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless
communications and digital multimedia solutions, today announces that its WiMAX
SoC was almost consistently the top performing solution in a recent independent
performance benchmark test of leading Mobile WiMAX(TM) chipsets. The MediaTek
WiMAX chipset (CPE form factor) outperformed four of its peers (USB dongle and
Minicard form factors) of the same product segment in a wide variety of tests
designed to test the capabilities of the chipsets under challenging network
conditions.

The benchmark tests were conducted by Signals Research Group, LLC (SRG) and
published in a recent issue of Signals Ahead, the consultancy’s
subscription-based research product. For this round of chipset testing, SRG
worked with Agilent Technologies, who provided the Agilent E6651A Mobile WiMAX
Test Set and the N5106A PXB baseband generator and channel emulator, along with
engineering support, to test the chipsets in a laboratory-controlled
environment.

In the industry’s first independent test of Mobile WiMAX chipsets, the test
scenarios included both uplink and downlink performance, with the results
providing a strong indication of how well the solutions would be able to
transmit and receive data in a commercial Mobile WiMAX network.

The report concluded that the MediaTek solution transmitted the cleanest
signal as determined by measuring the EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) with this
finding suggesting that under certain conditions the MediaTek solution could be
able to support higher uplink data rates than its peers, for example, at edge
of cell coverage. Further, the results of the tests found that under more
challenging network conditions with low signal levels there was as much as a 2x
performance difference in the downlink between the MediaTek solution and the
performance of several of its peers. In other words, the MediaTek solution can
provide a superior receiver performance and achieve the highest throughput with
very low signal levels.

Associate GM of MediaTek Wireless Advanced Technology BU, Jyh-Shin Pan
responded to the report, "We are very happy to see the results done by a
prominent wireless research firm and it shows that following our tradition,
MediaTek is shipping the best WiMAX SoC and highest performing products to our
customers." He also added, "As WiMAX is still a growing technology and network
coverage is still improving, being able to use the highest performing chipsets
is crucial for the success of any operators."
